Earlier this year, I traveled to South Africa to cover the construction of Mainstream Renewable Power’s latest wind energy development, the 80MW Noupoort wind farm. As well as my primary assignment to photograph the wind farm – including it’s construction, I also created a film about it’s construction including an interview / narration by Pule Segale, the assistant site manager on the wind farm. One of the biggest differences on this trip compared to my previous one was the inclusion of drone photography and aerial filming. Previously, I used a helicopter to get the necessary aerial footage I needed, but found that for all it’s benefits, it was also a little restricting in that I was limited to when I could get in the air. The drone allowed me to fly whenever I felt the best light was available, or when something such as blade deliveries happened. This proved to be a godsend and allowed me to get footage (both photo and video) which I could otherwise have missed.
